We need an unexpected day off every once in a while. Whether it’s a snow day, a mental health day, or, in our case here in Northern California today, a VERY windy thunderstorm, we can actually benefit from having our routine interrupted and being forced to stay at rest. For you yogis out there, this is like when you teacher directs you to take a child’s pose in the middle of class. You may not think you need it, you may even feel a bit antsy like you “should be doing something,” but it gives you an opportunity for the deep nourishment we so typically deny ourselves.

Even physiologically, our bodies don’t get stronger from lifting weights, that just breaks muscle down. It’s the body’s innate healing response that rebuilds and strengthens our muscles. Without any recovery, we would continue to break ourselves down and see no benefit from out efforts. This is true at the gym and in life. We NEED these opportunities to let our bodies, minds & emotions be at rest.
Yesterday, one of my clients who is experiencing some depression said to me, ” I just want to stay inside, cook soup, bake cookies, and snuggle up in bed all day.” Me too!! Yes, she is also dealing with some serious sadness, but there is something really normal about wanting to hole up for a day, or even a week, in the middle of winter. We are mammals, after all, as much as we like to think we are super human and can override nature. In fact, we are more healthy and balanced when we work with the rhythms of nature, instead.
Today, you may find yourself having, or needing, a bit of a break. If it’s winter where you are, like it is here in Cali, or if you are close enough to feel these gusts of wind, imagine the cleansing benefits of wind and water, and surrender to this moment of rest and what the italians call “la dolce far niente” – the sweetness of doing nothing. You may decide to take extra long to prepare a warm soup, bake some holiday cookies, or look over your accomplishments this year. Perhaps you’ll even pull out a favorite book or dust off an old photo album. Or maybe you’ll just snuggle up in a warm bed.
Whatever you do, soak it up and enjoy, and please share any insights that come from your rest in the comments below.
Sending you much snowy/windy/rainy day love,
