Hello and welcome to my new website & blog! I am a HUGE lover of new beginnings and am excited to share information and reflections through this site.
So, as with any new venture, foundations and purpose are important to assess. And in asking myself WHY I created this site the answer, in its deepest form, is love.
Before your mind drifts to long walks on the beach, wine-paired dinners and sloppy kisses, take a moment to ask yourself – where do you feel love in your life? What friends, animals, people, places, experiences stir a feeling of love in you? Who do you love (I hope you include yourself in this!)? What work do you love? What creative pursuits, activities, hobbies do you love to be doing? What brings you a feeling of being connected to your deepest self?
Lets not jump off the deep end here and start a philosophical discussion about the definition of love (more time for that later) – just based on your felt experience, what brings love to your life?
With the new beginnings of both the Chinese and Tibetan New Year right around the corner (and lots of Valentine’s hype in the air), I urge you to see what love you already have, assess what kind you want more of, and call upon the energy of new beginnings to invite more love into your life.
Here are actions steps for building upon the love in your life:
In the next three days I challenge you to…
- Use the word love when you feel it but are pulled to use something less invested or more intellectual.
- Tell someone you love that you love them! Your plant, your dog, your friend, your mentor… anyone or even anything!
- Explore the different ways love shows up in your life, when you are with people and when you are alone. When and under what conditions do you feel the most love in your life?
I want to hear from you (yes, you, with that really great screen-reading posture!)! What are your thoughts on love as a foundation for change? What comes up for you when you hear the word love or read about it? Leave a comment below and share your thoughts!
Got a few more moments? A little background…
Almost ten years ago now, a new friend asked me, point blank, “So… what’s it all about for you?” I knew the answer but was afraid it would sound cheesy to say. Fortunately, I croaked out a relatively confident answer, “Love. Its about love.” Honestly I was relieved when he seemed to silently agree, to nod and to not come back with an intellectual challenge or claim that I was being a big cheeseball.
Just a couple years later, while I was studying at Harvard, my advisor and the co-founder of my program of study, was hosting a farewell party as he set out to move and lead a program at another top-notch school. He stood before us, teachers, students, colleagues and cafeteria staff and told us that, his time at Harvard, more than anything, had been about love.
I remember feeling somewhat surprised – shocked, really, that he could use that word in this academic institution. More than anything I was surprised by his confidence and grace in expressing what many of us deeply feel but are too disconnected, busy, or fearful to express: our lives, particularly for those in any sort of helping professions, but really for everyone, I believe, are an expression of love. And each counseling session I had done that year with a pregnant teen was set on a foundation of love.
His confidence gave me confidence to say what I am saying to you now: that the resilience of our families, communities and nations depends on love. That our individual thriving is directly related to how much love we can allow to flow through our lives. Now, as we discussed above, love can take many forms and can be easily mistaken! So, as we continue to explore this concept, this feeling, this energy, I ask that you keep your mind and heart open to discovering more and more what love is, and what it isn’t. And I invite, welcome and celebrate your thoughts, feelings and responses! After all, we are in this together… and we’ll talk more about that next time:)
In the meantime, wishing peace and love to each and every one of you.
