Since my last post, I have been reflecting on Dan Siegel’s sage advice on balancing your brain through seven daily habits. I realized I love this advice so much because he is really giving a neuro-scientific prescription for balancing your entire life, on a daily basis.
I noticed that the two areas that I *thought* I’d had in the bag – play and down time – were actually quite lacking in my day-to-day life, especially during the week. At the end of each day, going through a mental check list, I could find focus time, physical time, social time, time in, and sleep time, but… when I looked for down time and play time they were harder to identify.
SO I started to look into the times I am truly PLAYFUL and the times I really veg out and do nothing. They seemed to overlap with other categories or to-dos – I am playful with my running family, goofy with my partner, I veg out while I am checking email, etc etc. So where was the full on PLAY?!
Which lead me to ask myself, when do I have the most FUN?
And was surprised that the answer did not come quickly. I could go so far as to say everything I do is fun – learning, teaching, connecting with people. Or I could say that’s all “work” and it looses its playful glaze. Nevertheless, I am continuing to define what makes me feel most alive.
I’ve got some clear answers coming through but right now I want to ask YOU:
- What makes you feel alive?
- When was the last time you had FUN?
- How is FUN incorporated into your daily life?
I also want to challenge you to write THE ONE THING in the comments below that is the MOST fun in your life right now. Go ahead, don’t be shy! Where do you lose track of time, laugh uncontrollably, enjoy yourself and fully soak in joy? Share the love with others in the comments below and build a brainstorm of playfulness to spice up this interweb and add some joy to everyone’s day.
As for down time, we’ll get to that later (ah-ha! That’s why it never happens!;)
Much love to you,
